ARRUDA, Evaristo de Medeiros Arruda

We sadly announce the passing of Evaristo Arruda at Bradford Valley Care Community in Bradford, Ontario. Evaristo was 97.

Born in Ribeirinha, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Evaristo was the boy who ran away from school with his parents’ blessing and grew up working in the fields. He moved to Canada in 1959, joining his brother Bernardinho in Manitouwadge. He later became the beloved “Rudy” at Sarnia City Hall as head of janitorial services.

Evaristo was known for his honesty, independence, and joyful spirit. He deeply valued his Catholic faith and was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Church in Sarnia. After moving to Newmarket later in life, he remained a proud and loving father and grandfather.

He is predeceased by his wife Dialina, parents Hermano and Leonilde, siblings Hermano, Bernardinho, José, Maria, and daughter Conceição (Tina). He is survived by children Antonio (Dr. Wilma Arruda) and Maria de Fatima (Terrance Corry), brother Carlos, and grandchildren Christopher, Brittany, Ivan, and William.

Friends will be received at McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 431 Christina St. N., Sarnia, on Friday, July 4, 2025, from 10–10:45 a.m. Funeral service follows in the chapel at 11 a.m., with livestream available. Interment at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
