BAKER, Ronald Wallace Baker
September 12, 1942 - March 6, 2026
It is with great sadness we advised of the passing of our dear Elder Ronald Wallace Baker, affectionately known as ‘Red’. Ron was born in Vancouver to his late Mother Emily (nee Rivers) and late Father Chief Simon Baker. He grew up and resided on Capilano Indian Reserve No. 5 X̱wemelch’stn and passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by the love of family and friends. He attended Capilano Elementary, Norgate Community, Hamilton Secondary, and Delbrook High Schools. Ron worked for many years at Western Stevedore as a Longshoreman, owned and operated a cruise business with his 60-foot yacht Kap Salish as well as a Moped shop in Kihei, Maui. He also had a few side gigs as a vacuum salesman, newspaper delivery person, a caddy and occasionally worked in Khot-La-Cha Art Gallery and Gift Shop for his mom Emily. He proudly believed a man should never be without a job. Ronald loved to travel the world, he cruised the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and travelled to Asia, South America, New Zealand, and Los Angeles. Ronald will be remembered for his many grand entries at Squamish Nation Powwows where he proudly promoted culture as his late Father Simon had taught him at a very young age. Ronald recalled the first Powwows here at Squamish Nation when with his siblings and cousins prepared over 500 poles that were to be used for Tee Pees for visitors.
