Born on December 23, 1958, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Merrill lived a full and vibrant life. He was the proud owner and operator of Merrill Barnes Jr. Excavating, where he was known for his hard work, integrity, and strong presence in the community.
Merrill will be lovingly remembered by his partner, Sandy; his children Chris (Sam), Tyler (Lynne), and Ashley (Martin); and his cherished grandchildren Wesley, Oliver, and Henri, who lovingly called him “Poppy.” He is also survived by his siblings Dinah (Jean), Harold (Pam), Glen (Stephanie), Muriel, and Grace (Danny).
Merrill was known for his generosity, infectious smile, boundless energy, and for being the life of every party. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need, never hesitating to lend a hand or offer support. A devoted father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend, he brought joy to those around him and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A private funeral service will be held for immediate family. A public celebration of life will take place in July to honour Merrill’s memory with the laughter, stories, and music he so loved.
