BENNETT, Mary Bennett

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother at Braemar Nursing Home on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, Mary Bennett of Wingham passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family three days shy of her 92nd birthday. Her life was defined by love, strength, and devotion to family.

She was a loving mother to Jen (Rob) Gallaher, Debbie Prue-Havers, George (Sherri) Prue, Heather Brown-Webster, and John (Sue) Brown. Her greatest joy came from her family, and she was a cherished grandmother to Michelle Ortlieb (Doug), Jenessa McKee, Mary Havers, Ryan MacGowan, George Jr. Prue, Robert Prue (Melissa), Chad Webster, Carla Webster (Mat), Tausha Culliton (Tony), Matt Brown (Ashly) and Ashley Stewart (Chris). She was also a proud and blessed great-grandmother to Hayden, Monroe, Madelyn, Daxtin, Charlea, George, Nora, Lucas, Giuliana, Alessandra, Greyson, Jaxson, Coltyn, Sophia, Maverick, Eve, Elexis and Jade. Each of whom brought her immense happiness.

She is now reunited with those who predeceased her: her husbands, George Prue and Roy Bennett; her parents, David and Ethel (Ford) Finley; her beloved daughter, Kim MacGowan; her son, Scot Prue; and her cherished grandson, Joey Havers. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Harold Finley and Bob Finley (Margaret); her sisters, Doris Phillips (John), Edith Wardlaw (Lee), Gertrude Hynes (Dave), Nora Schroeter (Len), Margaret Farrow (Jack), and Betty Easterbrook-Blackwell (Ken).

Mary was a true homemaker in every sense of the word. Her home was her canvas, and she poured her heart into creating warm and welcoming spaces for her family and friends. She loved to garden and took pride in transforming each yard she tended into a place of colour, peace, and beauty. Inside her homes, Mary had a remarkable gift for decorating. She had an eye for detail and a passion for making every space feel lived-in, loved, and just right. Everything she touched—whether a bare room or a forgotten corner—became beautifully arranged, a reflection of her care and the joy she found in making a house a home. Beyond her dedication to home and family, Mary committed much of her time to community and sisterhood. She was a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Huron Chapter 89, from 1977 until its closure in 2013. During those many years, she served faithfully, including taking on the role of Worthy Matron. Through her service, Mary formed deep friendships, offered guidance to others, and lived out the values of charity, truth, and loving kindness that the organization holds dear. Her kindness, resilience, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the family she loved so dearly.

A private funeral service will be held at McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham on Tuesday, December 23rd, 2025. Interment will take place at Wingham Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Wingham & District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
