BERGER , Antal “Tony” Berger
November 16, 1934 - August 20, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Antal “Tony” Berger—a man of deep faith, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family. Tony passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and generosity that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born in Hungary on November 16, 1934, Tony immigrated to Canada at the age of 21, settling in Montreal where he met the love of his life, Anne Berger (née Krump). Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in love, family, and community. Tony was predeceased by his beloved wife Anne and is survived by his children Marianne (Alain), Tom, and Andrea (John). He was a cherished Papa to Lauren (Chris), Michelle (Tyler), Matthew, and Ethan, and a proud great-grandfather to William and Maya, whose arrivals brought joy to the family in his later years.
Tony was a man of few words, choosing instead to express himself through thoughtful actions. Whether slicing thick pieces of crusty white bread with a generous layer of ED Smith Triple Berry jam, flattening chocolate foil wrappers with his thumbnail at Easter, or ensuring every French fry from a McDonalds Happy Meal was eaten with gratitude, he taught his family to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and never waste a bite.
He had a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit, working as a barber, government employee, home renovator, rabbit farmer, and eventually the proud owner of a successful decorative concrete business. He believed in doing things himself and passed that belief on to his children, often teaching them skills and encouraging independence. His confidence in his family was unwavering.
Tony was a proud Hungarian and active in the Hungarian community through dance and choir groups. He was a graceful dancer, a beautiful tenor, and a lover of music. His accordion and organ playing brought joy to many, and his voice lit up church services. He especially loved the sound of the pan flute, which brought him peace and joy.
He was a man of curiosity and adventure—always on the hunt for a good deal (he bought chia seeds in bulk long before they were trendy!), always exploring new places, and always learning. He spoke multiple languages fluently and loved talking about Europe, Germany, and Hungary. He traveled back to Hungary and Germany many times—sometimes with family, sometimes on his own—always eager to reconnect with his roots. He and Anne also enjoyed their timeshare vacations, traveling together to places like the Bahamas and Mexico, creating lasting memories in the sun.
Tony loved nature and gardening. He spent countless hours researching plants and flowers, growing seedlings in the basement, and using coffee grounds to fertilize the soil. Summers at the cottage with his grandchildren were filled with hikes, frog hunts, snowmobile adventures, and roasting marshmallows and hot dogs at the fire. He had a knack for finding the best walking sticks and teaching them how to build a fire or spot frogs near the water. He also cherished the solitude of the cottage when it was quiet, spending peaceful hours reflecting, listening to music, and enjoying the stillness of nature.
He had incredible strength and was always the first to help with home moves, renovations, or heavy lifting—even into his seventies. Whether it was painting cabinets, landscaping, or finishing a basement, he was always ready to lend a hand.
Tony’s quiet strength was never more evident than in moments of crisis. He remained calm, steady, and focused on what mattered most: your safety, and not the material things.
He spent many peaceful hours in his home office, listening to music, researching, and staying connected with family overseas. He loved sharing updates and stories, always keeping his loved ones close, no matter the distance.
Tony adored his grandchildren and lit up whenever he saw them. He showed his love through gestures, listening intently, and sharing quiet moments. He had a playful side—especially at Easter, when he would quietly reveal the locations of all the hidden eggs. And he had a sweet tooth all his own, often making special trips to the Lindt store or the Dare Factory to indulge in his favorite treats.
Tony lived a good, long life—one filled with laughter, music, adventure, and love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved him, and his memory will forever be cherished.
