BONATHAN, Ruth Vianna Bonathan

A tribute to a life well-lived is the love that continues to shine long after those moments have passed. Just shy of her 101st birthday, Ruth passed away peacefully and comfortably on the morning of February 10, 2026 at Bowmanville Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and style.

Ruth was born in Bowmanville, Ontario on March 31, 1926 to Harvey and Gladys Bonathan. Survived by her loving sisters, Jean Rickard and Mary Margaret Bonathan, nephews George Rickard (Lana), Doug Rickard (Robin I-R), and Robin Rickard (Wendy T-R), nieces Bev Elaschuk (Mark), and Janice Mills (David). Predeceased by sister Barbara.

Ruth’s journey began after she graduated from high school, when she attended Shaw’s Business College in Toronto. Her path then led her to join the Bonathan family’s retail & building supply business in Newcastle, where she worked alongside her father, Harvey, until the store was sold. At the age of 31 (1957), Ruth was employed with General Motors of Canada in Oshawa, starting as a stenographer and steadily climbing the ranks to become senior secretary in the purchasing department. Her dedication and expertise in buyer’s training, particularly in the non-product sectors, earned her responsibility for sourcing a wide range of commodities essential to GM’s operations.

Ruth had incredible energy and spirit – living a long and vibrant life. She enjoyed curling and bowling, she was a passionate enthusiast of golf, she found comfort in the simple pleasures of gardening and in reading a good book. Her heart was generous, volunteering at the Newcastle Food Bank.

Ruth’s father, Harvey Bonathan built a charming waterfront cottage in Coboconk, Ontario. Summers there became cherished family retreats, etching unforgettable memories into Ruth’s life. Though Ruth never married, her adventures with her younger, spirited sister, Mary Margaret, took them across the globe – exploring vibrant cities, new destinations and creating stories that would last a lifetime.

With grace and a cheerful disposition, Ruth carried herself with effortless elegance, often turning heads with her impeccable style. Her kindness and her courage – unwavering. She leaves behind a legacy woven into the hearts of her nephews and nieces with admiration and love. Thankfully, she gifted us a treasure of memories.

Though Ruth has left this world, our image of her remains etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know and love her.

Cremation has taken place – a private committal in the Spring.

The family sincerely extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sharma and the dedicate team at Bowmanville Hospital, 2East wing for exceptional care and team-support. Also thank you to cherished neighbourhood friends whose love, kindness and presence have been a comforting constant throughout the years.
