BRITTAIN, Peter Frederick Brittain

BRITTAIN, Peter Frederick Brittain

It is with heavy hearts the family of Peter Frederick Brittain announce his passing at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in the early hours of January 15, 2026 in his 69th year.

Peter’s passing will leave a sad void in the lives of his wife, Lori Stephenson-Brittain, his daughter Pamela Brittain, and son-in-law Justin Trent. He is survived by his sister Anne Brittain and pre-deceased by his parents Frederick and Rose (Clairn) Brittain, sister Janet Brittain, and brother Daniel Brittain. He will be sorely missed by his in-laws, many nieces and nephews, and friends.

Peter completed his elementary education in Ajax, ON and his secondary at Haliburton Highlands after his parents purchased and moved to a small cabin style resort on Halls Lake, Minden, ON. This area always held a special place in his heart and he returned often, even after moving to Port Hope in his early 20’s where he lived his remaining years.

Peter always possessed an inquisitive mind and at the age of 17, he found an advertisement for a “Locksmith Correspondence Course” on the back cover of a magazine and couldn’t resist. At the time he was not aware of how fortuitous this find would become. After trying his hand at many occupations he found the locksmithing course to be quite beneficial as someone always needed a door or lock fixed and he was always happy to oblige. That course, along with upgrade workshops and electrical education, provided job opportunities in sales with various lock companies, a locksmith position with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board and eventually, through hard work, dedication and support, he became an Electrical Mechanical Technician and started his own business (Britlok), which he proudly worked at and enjoyed until his final days.

Peter, being the eclectic man he was, tried his hand at many hobbies. He became a wonderful cook that provided his family and friends with many delicious breads, meals and desserts; and the pictures, recipes and tips to go along with them. He created beautiful wedding cakes, whittled interesting wooden utensils and figurines, took mischievous pleasure in teaching his daughter the enjoyment of music and whistling, and sketched lovely landscape scenes, just to name a few. His main passion however, was camping and bushcrafting especially at Silent Lake, his goal was to put together a backpack that weighed less than 35lbs – and we are happy to say he succeeded just before Christmas of 2025.

Peter’s courageous fight with cancer lasted just over a year, so we have many people to thank at the Northumberland Hills Hospital: Dr. Knackstedt and Linda, Dr Koneru, Dr. Niglas, Dr. Mule, Dr. Tisher, the Staff of wing 2A, and the Staff that were working in the Palliative care unit the early morning of January 15. And a special “Thank You” goes to the four patient nurses (Jill, Lindsey, Susan and Tracey) in the Oncology Unit, and Janet from Ed’s House. These wonderful women befriended Peter when he needed special friends the most.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 1-4pm, at the Masonic Hall, 54 Toronto Rd., Port Hope, ON, we are going to have an informal “Celebration of Life“ where friends and family can drop-in and have good conversations, share stories and honour Peter. All are welcome.

Donations in honour of Peter can be made to Northumberland Hills Hospital or the charity of your choice.
