BUDDEL, Mel Buddel
September 17, 2025
He was known for his selfless service, hardworking spirit, and joyful love of family, music, and nature — qualities that touched every community he belonged to. Surrounded by the love of his family, Mel passed away peacefully after receiving his final prayers on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 — leaving his loved ones with the gift of moving forward in spiritual acceptance and gratitude for their shared journey.
At the age of 81, Mel’s legacy continues through the love of his beloved wife and lifelong partner of 59 years, Shirley — whose unconditional love, empathy, and joy touched everyone around her, especially children. He was deeply proud of the two children with whom life blessed him, Dr. Neil Buddel (David Newman) and Ms. Rachel Buddel. Yet his greatest delight was found in his grandchildren: Harley (Morgan Judd), who carries forward his passion for working with his hands, and Felicity, already showing his spirit of independence and adventure.
Following the passing of his mother at a young age, Mel assumed significant care responsibilities for his late brothers, Ron and Darryl (with his wife Anne Buddel), and his sister Judy (the late Leslie Lawrence). He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces (Debbie, Jenny, Mercy, Sheri, Stephanie, and Yvette), nephews (Brian, Cajetan, Francis, the late John, Kenny, Lenny, Leroy, Sean, and Terry), cousins, extended family, and a wide circle of cherished friends.
Faith was at the heart of Mel’s life. Since 1984, he found both purpose and joy as a devoted parishioner of St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church, where he welcomed others as an usher, encouraged them as a parish ambassador, and quietly strengthened parish life through countless acts of service — from helping lead the Coats for Kids program to lending a hand wherever it was needed. His commitment to faith and service also shaped his decades with the Knights of Columbus, where his leadership and devotion carried him to the distinguished role of Fourth Degree Grand Knight Commander.
Despite living with modest resources, Mel’s generosity knew no bounds. Many remember him from his early days in Pakistan, where he had the only vehicle in his village — a work truck that became so much more. He used it to bring children to school, to carry the sick to care, and even to drive expectant mothers when it was time to give birth. With a lifelong soft spot for children, many continued to call on Mel in times of need or uncertainty. Without hesitation, he always found a way to help.
Just as strong as his faith and generosity was Mel’s joy in everyday life. His garden was both a retreat and a gift, where he nurtured beauty and shared it with his daughter, Rachel. Music, too, was a lifelong passion — Mel often served as the DJ at parish gatherings and community events, ensuring the music carried people together, whether or not anyone could pay. That spirit of generosity in music is something he passed on to his son Neil, who carries forward the same gift of bringing people together through song and piano. Music flowed through his veins — he was always moving to it, dancing like no one was watching. But when he and his sister Judy took to the dance floor to Jive, the entire cruise ship stopped to cheer them on.
Above all else, Mel’s family was his greatest devotion. He was endlessly proud of them, always present for them, and drew his deepest joy from their company. His generosity reached well beyond his home; once you met Mel, you were his friend. He gave freely of his time, whether volunteering in schools, organizing community programs, or quietly ensuring events ran smoothly — often the driving force behind the scenes.
Mel will be remembered not only for his deep faith but also for his warmth, thoughtfulness, and unfailing care for others. He was a mentor to many, a source of steady encouragement, and a constant reminder that life’s richest measure is found in giving. His legacy of love and service will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate and supportive teams at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville and Oshawa, whose intelligent care and human compassion made a difficult journey both bearable and filled with grace.
