Major Lorraine Burry was Promoted to Glory on May 16th, 2025 at the age of 79 after a brave nine-year battle with cancer.
Lorraine was born on February 14th, 1946, in Yorkshire, England – a Valentine’s baby. When her mother (Margaret) passed away when she was 7 years old, Lorraine, along with her father (Leslie) and brother (Gord) sailed across the Atlantic to a new beginning in Canada. Lorraine’s father later remarried (Alma) and the family settled in Toronto.
Lorraine faithfully served the Lord and dedicated her life to ministry. She served 28 years of officership in The Salvation Army with appointments in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, & Ontario, and a further 13 years as an employee at the Territorial Headquarters in Toronto. Even in retirement, Lorraine would faithfully share her faith in Jesus with everyone she met.
Lorraine was a loving and caring mother to her 3 children who always had a home cooked meal on the table for supper, helped with school assignments, and sewed & mended countless articles of clothing, toys, & blankets for her children (a tradition she continued to provide in her later years to her grandchildren). Never one for the spotlight and very skilled in business & finance, she always worked hard behind the scenes to support the various ministries to which God called her.
Lorraine was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Major Douglas Burry. She is survived by her second husband of nearly 11 years, Michael Chetman; and her children, Darryl (Kim) Burry, Angela (Mark) Tan, and Julie (Craig) McIntyre. Her 11 grandchildren, Cole, Sydney, Kenya & Peyton Burry; Nathan, Emily, Jeremy, Cameron, & Ella Lorraine Tan; and Breanna & Alyssa McIntyre, brought such joy to her life. Lorraine will be missed by her brother, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at The Salvation Army Oshawa Temple (570 Thornton Road North, Oshawa) on Friday, June 6th at 11am, with visitation one hour prior. The service can be livestreamed at https://youtube.com/live/PMAN_T-uqto.
