With quiet strength and boundless compassion, Peter Callens passed away at the age of 74, on August 1, 2025, at Oakridge Hospice in Port Perry, Ontario surrounded by his loving family. He left behind a life marked by service, integrity, and deep devotion to those who were lucky enough to know him.
Peter is survived by his loving partner of 20 years, Mary Beth Cowan. Their years together were marked by mutual respect, unwavering companionship, and a shared joy for life’s journey and helping others in the community. He is also deeply missed by his mother, Mary Aileen Callens of Florida; his children, Amy Micks (Scott) and Joe Callens, step-sons Cameron and Ryan McLeod (Tramy); and his six grandchildren—Brody, Tristan, Chelsea, Will, Evie, and Nathan—each of whom knew the unique joy of being truly seen and supported by their grandfather.
He was predeceased by his father, Albert Callens, and his brothers, Mark and Paul Callens.
Peter dedicated over three decades of his life as a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society in Peterborough, where his work touched hundreds of lives, offering hope, guidance, and compassion in moments when it was needed most. Outside of his profession, Peter found true peace in the natural world. He was never more at home than in a canoe, a wooded trail, or around a campfire, especially with the lifelong friends who made up the “Canoe Club”. Above all, Peter was a family man. A devoted and present grandfather, quietly supporting, encouraging, and celebrating every milestone, large or small. His presence was steady, his support unwavering.
Peter will be remembered as a man of quiet generosity, deep empathy, and unshakable kindness. He was the kind of person who made others feel heard, valued, and safe. A thoughtful listener, a loyal friend, and a gentle soul, Peter’s legacy is one of love and service.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Peter’s memory by spending time outdoors, supporting Oak Ridges Hospice or simply taking a moment to offer someone your full attention—just as Peter always did.
