Joyce was married to John Carr and mother of Hayden Carr. She was the mother-in-law to Janice McArthur and cherished Granny to Grandsons Brendan and Jordan and Grandma Joyce to Melanie and Todd. Joyce was Great Grandma to Aven, Aslyn, and Kyrie. Joyce was beloved Auntie to Neil (Kim), Joanna (Darryl), Gabrielle (Gary), Candice (Brian) and Elizabeth (Graham).

Joyce was born in San Fernando Trinidad and Tobago. She moved to Port-of-Spain in her early twenties and lived there until immigrating to Canada in 1985 at age 61 after her husband John passed away. She joined her son Hayden, who moved to Canada in 1969.

Joyce is predeceased by her parents Mildred and Claude Appleton, her husband John Carr, and son Hayden Carr (2023), as well as her siblings Clayton, Barbara, Eileen, and Rodney.

After Joyce’s post secondary studies, she qualified as a surveyor draughtswoman and worked for The Trinidad Government for 38 years at The Surveyor’s Office, the home of Trinidad and Tobago’s parliament in Port of Spain. Upon arrival in Oshawa, Ontario, Joyce became a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. Joyce was a part of the church choir, Woman’s Missionary Society, and an active participant of Bible Studies. With faith as her anchor and a positive mindset, she faced life’s challenges with great resilience.

Joyce was always known for her great sense of humour, her wealth of knowledge on politics and world events. She had an inquisitive mind and an amazing memory. Joyce’s character is an inspiration to others.

Visitation will be held on Friday August 15, 2025 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Oshawa Funeral Home (847 King Street West, Oshawa, ON). Visitation on Saturday August 16, 2025 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at Trinity Presbyterian Church (333 Rossland Road West, Oshawa, ON) followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM. Reception to follow. Private interment will take place at Lake View Cemetery, Kirkfield.
