CHRISTIE, George Patterson Christie
February 21, 1936 - March 25, 2026
On March 25, at 90 years old, George Patterson Christie passed away surrounded by family at Ed’s House in Cobourg.
George was predeceased by Lucie-Anne, his beloved wife of 42 years. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Donna and son-in-law Phil, and his son Brian and daughter-in-law Anna Marie.
Proud “Granda” to Hannah (and her partner Dan), Devin, Blake (and his wife Jenn), and great-grandfather to Jesse and Kyle.
Born in Greenock, Scotland, George was one of six children. His sisters liked to say that their mother waited five years after George was born to have another baby because he was such a troublemaker.
In his twenties, George travelled the world as part of the Scottish Merchant Navy. He turned 21 while at sea and, because the ship crossed the International Date Line, the calendar moved back a day, allowing him to celebrate his birthday twice.
George then moved to Montreal, where he met Lucie-Anne. Together, they built a life and raised their two children. One by one, George’s siblings all followed him to Canada. The Christie family gathered often for lively celebrations and camping trips, always with rum and cokes in hand, singing their favourite Scottish tunes.
George married into Lucie-Anne’s French Canadian family and inherited 10 new siblings-in-law. He picked up the language quickly, though he always claimed he spoke French “comme une vache grecque”. Over the years, he and Lucie enjoyed many trips to visit their family in Caraquet, New Brunswick.
They later moved to Cobourg, and George became a proud Granda to Blake, Hannah, and Devin. He could be found leading tin-whistle parades around his house, serving them ice cream specials and SunnyD, and getting a little too competitive in backyard games of croquet.
George will be remembered for his car console stuffed to the brim with strawberry candies, his fluency with a harmonica, his cupboard full of cheese nips, his generosity, his stubbornness, and his signature Tilley hat.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026 from 1 – 4 p.m. in the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre, Cobourg.
Donations to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
