Arlene Mae Gail Clemmens passed away peacefully on July 8th, 2025, at Joseph Brant Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 84 years old. Arlene was a devoted wife to the late Paul Clemmens, with whom she shared 30 beautiful years of marriage. After 36 years, she is now reunited with him.
She was a cherished mother to Robert Clemmens (Darlene), Tyra Wilkinson (Matt), and the late David Clemmens (Linda). Her grandchildren were her pride and joy: Ashley (Chris), Matthew, Miranda, Greyden, Brooklyn, and great-grandson Nicholas. She cherished these relationships and the time spent together.
Arlene will be deeply missed by her brother Norm Pratt, sisters-in-law Vi and Jean, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the fourth of six children, preceded in death by her brothers Alan, Ken, and Dave, and her sister Ethel.
Arlene grew up in Toronto’s west end, attended Runnymede Collegiate, and began her career at TD Bank. She later worked as a bookkeeper for an accounting firm, organizing for a variety of Toronto businesses. She eventually became the office manager for JD Caulking, retiring in 2010.
In her retirement, Arlene was an active member of the Bayshore Seniors Association, serving as president for several terms. She loved playing card games and later became known for her skill in more complex games like Bridge or Bid Euchre. She was always working on some new knitting project—knitting and/or crocheting sweaters for her grandkids or the club bazaar. She enjoyed reading historical fiction novels and solving puzzles like sudoku or crosswords.
Arlene found her greatest joy at Woodland Beach, where her grandfather first purchased property and built the first family cottage. Her mother later bought a beach property that became the family cottage for five generations. Many of her cherished memories were created there, surrounded by family, extended family, and friends.
She cherished the simple pleasures in life, such as family gatherings, especially with her grandparents, and Sunday roast beef dinners with Yorkshire pudding. She was known for introducing unsuspecting cottage guests to wartime English meals like spotted dog on a cool Thanksgiving weekend at the cottage.
Arlene had a wonderful sense of humor and could laugh at herself as easily as she did humorous situations. She was the matriarch of her family, always facilitating family gatherings and bringing people together. She was always a source of sound advice and graciously helped those she cared for whenever possible. A hardworking woman, she served as a strong role model to her family. Despite facing life’s challenges, including three separate breast cancer diagnoses and losing Paul just as they were entering their prime years, she never let life bring her down.
We invite you to join family and friends in celebrating her beautiful life at the Bayshore Seniors Hall located at 2000 Tiny Beaches Road South in Woodland Beach on Sunday, August 10th from 1–3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
