COLWELL, Joan Colwell
April 3, 1939 - February 22, 2026Family and friends are mourning the passing of Joan (Platt) Colwell on February 22, 2026.
Joan was born in Toronto in April 1939 and moved to Beeton at the age of 10.
Joan was a dedicated teacher for 40 years, starting in a one room school house at the age of 19, teaching all eight grades. She continued her career in Beeton, Lloydtown, Schomberg and the final few decades at Kettleby Public School teaching Grade 1.
Her greatest joy was teaching her students to read and took the greatest pride in the success of her phonics program. She loved to run into her former students in her travels.
Joan was an avid ball player throughout her youth and adulthood making many friends over the years. In the early 1960’s her Beeton team, part of the York Simcoe Softball League were champions and finalists several years, a time she fondly remembered and reminisced about to her grandchildren. In recent years she was a dedicated Blue Jays fan.
Joan was a proud member of the Georgian Bay Steam Club for many years serving as secretary for several. She remained a proud owner of an Ontario wind and pump gas engine.
Joan loved going to auction sales. She enjoyed many hobbies in her retirement (1998) including golfing, bowling, walking, reading, embroidery and scrapbooking. She made a scrapbook for each grandchild.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack (2023) to whom she was married to for over 60 years. She is lovingly remembered by son John (Sheryl), daughter Janis, and her grandchildren Dale (Victoria), Dylan, Andrew (Jaimey), Connor and Paige.
A private family gravesite service will be held at a later date.
