CURRIE, Wilfred Gregory Currie

September 22, 1930 - December 5, 2025
CURRIE, Wilfred Gregory Currie
A child of the Atlantic Ocean has sailed to his final resting place overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Our father, Greg (Wilfred) Currie, gained his wings December 5th to once again dance with Mom to the Black Velvet Band. Admired by all who knew him; he was a man whose humility and selflessness were foremost in all he did. The world Dad was born into was not one of opportunity and privilege, only hardship and responsibility. Delivered in the family home on Bridgeport Row – in the shadow of Glace Bay’s Number 26B Colliery – the coal dust and the salt breeze of the nearby ocean would ultimately shape his life. Being an elder child in a large family with little money meant his dream of a higher education was just that – a dream! Early working life would see him labouring in the notorious, life-taking coal mines of Cape Breton.
In 1950, Greg wed his childhood sweetheart Dolly (Charlotte) Gouthro, and had Mom not passed January 20th, they would have celebrated 75 years of marriage October 26th. Dad and Mom began life together on Cape Breton before he joined the military in 1954. Their lives and growing family would see a number of postings before finally settling in Petawawa in 1968. Retiring as a Sergeant C.D.2, his exemplary military service would span 53 years to include regular forces service, reserve service and supplementary reserve service. Aside from his military service, he was Caretaker at Petawawa Housing Corporation’s Riverview Apartments from its opening in 1983 until his retirement in 2014. Dad’s Volunteerism was heralded, and his commitment to organizations like the Petawawa/Pembroke Lions’ Club (Past President), C.N.I.B., Royal Canadian Legion, Petawawa (Branch 517), St. Maurice Parish – later St. Francis of Assisi – bear testament to a life of giving. Dad was a dedicated husband and father. He treasured and protected his children and embraced their every accomplishment. He took great pride in his role as a father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a great-great-grandfather.
He is the loving and devoted father of Shirley (Matt), Sonya-Adell (Charles), Wilfred Bernard (Vivian), and Dana-Gouthro (Donna), Grandfather to Shelley (Kevin), Shawn (Tammy), Trevor (Melanie), Shannon (Maribeth),Tessa (Chris), Jody (Chloe), Ryan (late) (Rebecca), and Joshua. Great Grandfather to Brandon, Nicholas (Vanessa), Jessey, Alexander, Tylor (Meghan), Keenan, Emma, Thalia, Ben, Asher, Emmeline, Caleb, Thomas, George Dana, Malcolm, and Isla, and great-great-grandfather to Leah. Dad, you were the stalwart of our family; the one who quietly held it together. We’ll miss your love and guidance. You’re forever in our hearts. Time to Stand Down Airborne Trooper…your work here is done!

Prayer of Entrustment to the Divine Mercy

O Lord, our God. We place our trust in you, because you are mercy itself.
We repent of our sins and turn to You for mercy. We trust You to provide for our every need, according to Your will.

Help us to forgive others as You forgive us. We promise to be merciful by our deeds, words and prayers.

Though we have fears because of human weakness, we rely on Your infinite goodness and mercy.

We entrust to your mercy our very lives, our present situation and our uncertain future. We entrust to You the future of our planet, our Church, our nations, our families and all our needs. With loud cries we implore your mercy on us and on the whole world.

Look upon us, created in your image and likeness. Form us in the Heart of Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit into the living images of mercy. May all come to know the depth of Your mercy and sing the praises of Your mercy forever.

Amen!
