SWAN, Dorothy Evelyn Swan
SWAN, Dorothy Evelyn –
April 30, 1938 – July 1, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dorothy Evelyn Swan, on July 1, 2023.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, David.
She was mother to Michael (Georgia) and Stacey; and grandmother to Michael Jr. Born in Toronto, Dorothy was the daughter of Grace and Edward Summers.
Edward was the Chief of Police in Dunnville, Ontario, where Dorothy, her sister, Patricia, and her brother, Frank, grew up with a keen sense of community service. Her brother, Frank, was shot down over the English Channel during WWII on April 29, 1943, at the age of 23.
Dorothy often spoke with pride of his sacrifice for the freedom of this country.
Dorothy graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1959. She then completed a post graduate course in Operating Room Technique and Management at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
Her career as an Operating Room Supervisor took her from St. Michael’s Hospital, ultimately to the former York Finch General Hospital, from which she retired at 55 years of age.
She died surrounded by her son, Michael, her grandson, Michael Jr., her daughter-in-law, Georgia, and her ever-present canine companion, Missy.
We give special thanks to the staff at the The Barrieview Retirement Home and the Bayshore nursing staff for taking such good care of her and David in their final years.
We are also most grateful for the presence of Angie McMillin in her life.
A more caring soul we could not have hoped for. Godspeed Dorothy.
You will be missed by all of us who loved you.
