PRINCE, Dr. Alan Theodore Prince Obituary

PRINCE, Dr. Alan Theodore – (February 15, 1915 – October 2, 2015)

Was the son of the late Theodore Prince and the late Sarah Helena McMillan. Alan was predeceased by his first wife Virginia Lea, and is survived by his second wife Eleanor Aass.

He leaves two daughters, Mary Kaschub (Dr. Bob Kaschub) (deceased) and Linda Anderson (Dr. David Anderson) and five grandchildren, Beth (David Ferguson), Alan Kaschub (Michelle), Tuli (Scott Baldwin), Bruce Anderson (Mayumi), Stephen Anderson (his partner Janice Mcguinness) and eight great-grandchildren Anna, Sarah, David, Kate, Daniel, Henry, Charlie and Lisa.

Alan received his B.A. and M.A. from the University of Toronto. He did his doctoral studies at the University of Chicago. After graduation, he worked at the National Research Council in Ottawa during the war, to find replacement linings of high temperature furnaces for the production of steel and other high temperature industrial products. These furnace linings were produced at Canadian Refractories Limited, Kilmar, Quebec.

After the war, for one year he joined the staff of the University of Manitoba, as a Professor of Petrology, in the department of Geology. His next assignment was back in Ottawa at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, where he served until 1967, when he joined the Department of the Environment, from 1967 until 1973.

He became the Director of Inland Waters Branch from 1973 to 1975 he was Assistant Deputy Minister of Energy Mines and Resources. Then, in 1975 he was named President of the Atomic Energy Control Board, a position which he held until his retirement in December, 1978.

At Alan’s request, there will be no funeral only a quiet family gathering at a later date.
