O’DACRE, Edwin “Ed” O’Dacre

O’DACRE, Edwin “Ed” O’Dacre  –  88, of Toronto, passed away on August 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born in a log cabin outside of South Porcupine, Ontario, on December 25, 1934.

From these depression era beginnings, he achieved an amazing life.

An old school newspaper man, Ed worked 28 years with the Globe & Mail, from Editor of the book pages to Publisher of the magazine division.

He finished his career as publisher of Canadian Geographic magazine in Ottawa in the late ’90s.

Ed was known for his terrific sense of humour, fiercely loyal nature, and love of family. He is survived by his loving spouse of 59 years, Bonita O’Dacre. Journalists both, they met in the early sixties working at the Calgary Herald. Family was paramount in Ed’s life.

He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Erin (Michie); and his sons, Tim (Jenny) and Brendan (Melanie).

Ed leaves behind his sister, Theresa, who will miss their weekly telephone chats. ‘Dangrad’ also leaves his cherished grandchildren, Flannery, Nate, Flynn, Niko and Dobrila. An avid motorcyclist, Fast Eddie had a tempestuous 30-year affair with his Ducati, which he drove with joy into his 80s. He was a self-taught mechanic, and the bike pushed those limits.

The family kindly requests that any memorial contributions be made to a Charity of Your Choice in Ed’s honor.
