SMITH, Elizabeth “Betty” Louise Smith
MITH, Elizabeth “Betty” Louise – Passed away peacefully, at Wesburn Manor, on Monday, June 26, 2023, in her 100th year.
Predeceased in March 2022 by her husband of 74 years, John (“Jack”) Smith.
Loving mother of Robert (Janet) and Richard (Mary).
Grandmother of Patricia (Kristopher), Hilary (Leigh), Brendan (Katherine) and Lauren (Alexander).
Great-grandmother of Benjamin, Trevor, Gavin, Samuel and George. Betty was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Percy and Sarah Jennings and lived a happy childhood on Dunn Avenue in Parkdale, along with her older brother, John.
She attended Queen Victoria Public School and Parkdale Collegiate, before obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1945.
While at the UofT, Betty joined the Alpha Gamma Delta fraternity Tau chapter and served as a nursing volunteer at Toronto Western Hospital during WWII.
After graduation, Betty worked as a customer service representative with The Bell Telephone Company, until motherhood in 1950. She and Jack then moved to a new home in Etobicoke, where they raised their sons and embraced the St. Matthew’s Anglican Church community.
Betty made many friends as an active member of St. Matthew’s women’s auxiliary groups for over 60 years.
Betty and her family appreciated the wonderful care received from the staff at Wesburn Manor, where she was affectionally referred to as “Queen Elizabeth.” With a twinkle in her eye and a warm smile, Betty’s kind manner touched many lives in a long, well-lived life.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, 3962 Bloor Street West, Etobicoke, on Friday, July 14, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
