Shirley was born to Frank and Viola Halligan and raised on their family farm on Cavan Road, Plainville. She and Dad were married on November 25, 1950. They lived and raised their family in Oshawa. In her small kitchen, she planned and prepared all manner of feasts, baked countless pies, and dealt with every challenge, celebration or emergency that we presented. The kettle was always on for happy visits or a “restorative cup” of tea. Together with Dad, she enjoyed road trips, especially annual trips to the Gaspé. She catered legendary picnics in Peterborough for her beloved Aunt Mary Faulkner and took great joy in having her family gathered together no matter how crowded the table.
In so many ways, dementia took Mom from us years ago. We were thrilled when lucid moments brought her back to us. Through it all, she remembered and loved her family. We hope that as she returns to rest on Cavan Road, she is wrapped in the memories that have eluded her. She was deeply loved by those who went before and by all of us who will so dearly miss her.
We thank everyone who has helped our mother for the past several years, notably her nurse Ruby, Dr McGarry, and all of the personal support workers at Wynfield and from the St. Elizabeth Society.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 10-11 a.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home (124 King St. E., Oshawa). A Funeral Service will follow in the Chapel at 11 a.m. Interment Plainville United Church Cemetery.
