With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Ruth Elizabeth Flatt (née McKenzie), beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us on April 21, 2025, at the age of 87. Ruth passed away peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on October 6, 1937, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Ruth was the cherished daughter of George McKenzie and Marion (née Kline). She married her devoted partner, Rupert John Flatt, on December 28, 1957, and together they built a warm and loving home until his passing in 1994.
Ruth’s professional journey was marked by hard work and dedication—from receptionist roles to earning her real estate licence, and eventually serving as assistant manager at two major shopping centres in Thunder Bay. Her warm demeanor and organizational skills touched everyone she worked with.
Ruth was a committed member of the Slate River Baptist Church in her earlier years, and later of Calvary Baptist Church in Oshawa. Her deep faith and community involvement were central to her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her children Karen Lundy (Chris), Robert “Jack” Flatt (Jenny), and Daryl Coupland (Brian); her grandchildren Duncan, Ryan, Amy, Thomas, Josiah, Katy, and Alex; and her six great-grandchildren Brendan, Lily, James, Zack, Tavish, and Mackenzie. Ruth was predeceased by her beloved son Andrew (2013), daughter-in-law Theresa (2010), and brother Stan (2025).
A memorial visitation and funeral service will be held at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street North, Bowmanville, on Friday, May 9, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will take place in Thunder Bay later this summer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Ruth’s kindness, hospitality, and love for family will live on in the many lives she touched.
