Passed away at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the age of 75,
leaving behind a proud legacy as a husband, father, grandfather, and a surgeon with a life-long commitment to serving his community.
Born at home in the Canal District of Sault Ste. Marie, Sam was the eldest child of the late Earl and the late Dina Fratesi.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn (née Mihell), daughters Lauren LaBerge (Rob) and Jennifer Fratesi (Daniel Vriend),
and grandchildren Tyler and Juliana. Also survived by siblings Joe (Judy), Steve (Linda Pekalski), sister Mary Ann Borrelli (Aldo),
and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A life-altering accident at age 12 set Sam on his path to medicine. He attended medical school at Western University and completed
a vascular surgery fellowship in Ottawa. Returning to Sault Ste. Marie, he became the region’s only vascular surgeon, a tireless advocate
for patients and a mentor to many. He later earned advanced certifications and a Master’s in Medical Education.
His exceptional dedication earned him numerous honors, including the Hutchinson Award (2008) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012).
He was a founding faculty member at NOSM and a passionate clinical teacher, known for his high expectations and deep commitment to excellence.
Outside of medicine, Sam enjoyed life with his family at Pointe des Chenes, kayaking, blueberry picking, and participating in aquabics at the John Rhodes Centre.
He was also a lifelong learner and technology enthusiast who embraced coding and open-source platforms.
Cremation has taken place, and a private family inurnment has occurred. A family celebration of life will take place at a later date.
In lieu of service or visitation, Sam asked that we honor his memory through acts of kindness and compassion toward those in need.
Memorial donations to ARCH would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre.
