FRITZ, Herbert Fritz – Obituary
FRITZ, Herbert – Passed quietly on Monday, October 12, 2015 with his family by his side after a sudden stroke. He was in his 82nd year.
He was born March 2, 1934 in King Williams Town, South Africa to Jessica Harris and George Fritz. He immigrated to Canada in 1968. His first job in Canada was as a surveyor for the construction of York University.
Shortly after, he accepted a teaching position at Sacred Heart School in Midland and remained there until his retirement in 1996. In addition to his position at Sacred Heart, he taught art at St. Theresa’s High School. He also ran the chess and badminton clubs.
Coming from South Africa, Fritz (as known to his friends and colleagues) was a big soccer fan. As such he served as the school’s soccer coach and was a league convenor. Along the way, Fritz found time to indulge his artistic bent. A gifted artist, he also painted recreationally. There was even a charitable side to his artistic talent. For years, Fritz drew caricatures for the Sacred Heart Fun Fair, and painted the ceiling Frescoe at St. Margaret’s Church…twice; both before and after the Christmas fire of 1986.
Cherished and loved, he will be sadly missed by Margaret, his wife of 50 years, his 3 children George (Nyree), Helga (Mark) and Ingrid (Kevin), his grandchildren Sarah, John, Kurt, Hunter and Emily, as well as his past colleagues, friends and students.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Church, 589 Hugel Avenue, Midland on Friday, October 16th at 2 p.m. Cremation to follow.
If desired, memorial donations to the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
