GALARNEAU, Jacques Victor Galarneau
March 25, 1941 - January 12, 2026
In Loving Memory of Jacques Victor Galarneau
A man whose presence could light up any room he entered, whose laughter was infectious, and whose love for his community, his faith, his family and life itself knew no bounds.
Jacques Victor Galarneau, in his 85th year, passed away on January 12, 2026. Born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC on March 25, 1941, moved to Hamilton, ON, was raised and educated in the French community.
Jacques’ life was a testimony to love, laughter, family, and friends. He had a competitive streak too. Many of us learned the hard way not to underestimate him at the card table. He played to win but always with his trademark, a twinkle in his eye, that reminded us it was all in good fun.
Jacques was a man of many talents and passions, a professional “gentleman salesman”. His commitment to helping others started as a youth serving mass before school and continued as an adult with his involvement in his parish, the Knights of Columbus and St Vincent de Paul. Ultimately, his number one passion was in helping his wife in her many non-profit endeavours.
Jacques’ love for the great outdoors was apparent to all who knew him. He was an avid hiker, and camper, often organizing group hikes that brought friends and family closer. His enthusiasm for the mountains and trails was infectious, inspiring many to explore the natural beauty of our world. He shared his enjoyment for music, games, and dancing – just watch him on the dance floor. He loved genealogy, searching on 2 continents for information about our family ancestors. His research resulted in finding his namesake in La Rochelle, France and discovering that his namesake was the first Jacques Galarneau in North America (one of the founders of Quebec City). His happiest moments were the simplest ones – sitting back in his favorite chair, surrounded by family, watching hockey (especially Montreal Canadians vs. Toronto Maple Leafs). Win or lose, those games weren’t really about hockey. They were about being together, about sharing something he loved with the people he most loved. And if he taught us anything, it is the importance of faith, and that life is meant to be lived fully, loved deeply and celebrated often. A life well lived!
Predeceased by his father Eugene, his brother Gilles and his son Robert.
He is survived by his loving wife, Madeline (nee O’Connor), their three children: Theresa (Philip), Louise (Mark), Kari (Stephen), his mother Emerencienne (aka Mae), Sister-in-law Mary, and brothers-in-law: Gary, Paul (Vicky), & Mike (Patty). He will be deeply missed by 16 grandchildren, 14+ great-grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Jacques’ memory will live on through his family and friends, whose lives have been enriched by his unwavering love and support.
The family would like thank Dr. Patel, the nurses and staff at St. Andrews Terrace in recognition for the wonderful care provided to Jacques.
A memorial mass will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 11am at St. Mary of the Visitation Church (16 Cooper St., Cambridge, Ontario). A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow immediately after the mass in the reception hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Jacques’ name to the Wellspring Cultural Foundation or Prom-Edu-Val Society.
