GAMESTER, George Gamester

Passed away peacefully, in his 85th year, at North York General Hospital on January 4, 2024.

George was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia and grew up in the town of Weston.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Heather; his children, Sarah (Kaveh Shojania) and Steve (Tanya Blake); his niece, Robin Stevenson (Dave and Charlotte); and his five grandchildren, Paul, Ali, Martin, Ella, and Maya.

He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen Jones and Marion.

A lover of baseball, cats, classical music, golf, and history, George was known for his gentle disposition and deep interest in people’s lives.

Indeed, his column in the Toronto Star, where he was a respected journalist for more than forty years, was called Gamester’s People. He had many lifelong friendships, particularly among members of the Goons, the fantasy baseball league to which he devoted much time and energy.

His family will greatly miss his quiet confidence and easygoing nature.

A small private ceremony will be held in the days ahead, to be followed by a celebration of life for family and friends in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Toronto Public Library Foundation.
