GIBBS, Peter Gibbs

It is with deep sorrow we announce that Peter John Edward Gibbs passed away on October 16, 2025. That he died peacefully in his home was due to the deep devotion of his beloved wife, Linda. He is also survived by his sons, Jason and Michael, his cherished grandchildren, Samantha, Julianne and Cole, and his brother Mike and sister Carol. Peter was a man who could enter a room full of strangers and come out knowing the names and stories of many of the people there. He filled his 79 years with an unquenchable curiosity about the world around him, the people who inhabited it, and the remarkable deeds and disasters which have erupted throughout history. If you were to ask Peter a simple question, such as where he was born, he would end up responding with a sparkling tale filled with mirth, charm and warmth. His passion was writing and he began his career as respected reporter for the St. Thomas Times, Sarnia Observer and Ottawa Journal. He then joined the Ontario public service and put his writing talents to use at a number of ministries, most notably the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. In his retirement, he accelerated his reading of books and watching sports (mostly baseball, hockey and football). His favorite way to relax was to curl up with Linda and a glass of red wine and listen to their favorite music. In his final years, his room was covered with the album covers of his favorite artists such as Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Peter’s time on earth wasn’t an easy ride as he battled numerous cancers and a botched surgery but he fought through his almost eight decades with grit and humour, and the unrelenting support of his wife. Including his son Michael, who was a full time caregiver to his Mom and Dad during Peter’s final years. The family would also like to extend deepest thanks to the nurses and personal support workers who provided care to Peter at home, and to Dr. Carlos Yu, Dr. Ariah Schattner and the oncology staff at Princess Margaret Hospital.

A visitation will be held at Accettone Funeral Home 384 Finley Ave. Ajax, ON, Sunday, October 26, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Humane Society of Durham Region or to Casey House.
