GROAT, Stephen Groat
September 23, 1974 - February 7, 2026
Lovingly known as Steve, passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 7, 2026, as the result of an accident, in his 52nd year. He was taken from those who loved him far too soon and well before his time.
Born on September 23, 1974, in Scarborough, Ontario, Stephen was the beloved son of Edith Patricia Groat (née Gibbins) and Douglas Robert Groat.
Stephen was a devoted husband to Erin Michelle Groat (née Corlett) and a proud and loving father to his sons, Jacob and Zachary. His family was the center of his world, and his love, guidance, and steady presence will forever shape their lives. His sons describe him as their hero and the person they most hope to grow up to be.
Stephen was a proud serving member of the Durham Regional Police Service, dedicating nearly 27 years to protecting and serving his community. He served with pride, dignity, and a strong sense of morality, earning the respect of colleagues and the trust of the community. His integrity defined both his career and his character.
He is survived by his brother, Aaron Douglas Groat, his sister-in-law Joelyne, and his cherished niece Bronwyn and nephew Parker; his cherished sister-in-law, Raegan Corlett of Prince Edward Island; his cousin Charity Spitzig, her husband Jeff, and their children Madi, Owen, Ava, and Empria. He is further survived by his parents-in-law, Betty Corlett (née Keating) and Michael Corlett, along with extended family, close friends, and fellow officers.
Steve had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back. He will be remembered for his kindness, loyalty, quiet strength, and unwavering sense of right and wrong. Though his time was far too short, his impact was profound, and his legacy will live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held at De Stefano Funeral Home, 1289 Keith Ross Drive, Oshawa on Friday, February 13th from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. A Service and Celebration of Life will take place beginning at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at De Stefano Funeral Home.
