HALMINEN, Hannu Tapani Halminen
May 7, 1949 - February 24, 2026Died suddenly on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026. After 86 days in the hospital, he was relieved to be home and was making considerable progress in his recovery from a stroke in November.
His extraordinary legacy is difficult to encapsulate on one or two pages.
Born in Turku, Finland on May 7, 1949, to Elma and Kauko Halminen, Hannu embodied Finnish “Sisu” from a young age. The Halminens immigrated to Canada in July 1956, arriving with modest belongings but an adventurous and faith-filled outlook. Hannu’s strong work ethic began in his childhood — berry-picking to earn money to buy a cow he’d later sell for a profit, and diligently delivering Toronto Star newspapers to raise funds to buy his first bicycle.
Hannu attended College Park Elementary School and graduated high school from Kingsway College in 1967. His parents made many sacrifices to provide a Christian education for their children. Their example of hard work — along with the guidance and support from many in the community — helped shape Hannu’s philanthropic mindset for life. He truly lived Kingsway’s “service not fame” motto. Hannu maintained lifelong friendships with many of the friends he first met in the Oshawa area, often sharing adventures centered around cars and construction.
Following his graduation from Andrews University, Hannu married his high school sweetheart, Karen Salminen, in August 1971. Twins Lisa and Lori arrived on the scene in 1973, the same year that Hannu, his brother John, and father, founded Halminen Homes. In the early 1980s, Hannu also completed a masters of construction management at the University of Waterloo. Serving as a deacon, he was one of the charter members of the Bowmanville Seventh-day Adventist Church. Over the years, he generously shared his expertise on multiple church and school committees, boards, and on volunteer mission trips.
Hannu was extremely driven — by instinct and insight — and continually sought knowledge on how to grow professionally and personally. He was focused, serious, and deliberate — everything he did was intentional. This was evident to colleagues and family members who worked with Hannu. A resident of the Clarington area for nearly 70 years, he humbly welcomed opportunities to share his insights with others in the community that welcomed his family decades ago. Hannu was truly a “master of the long game,” always thinking and planning for the future.
He achieved great success with his home building, land development, and self storage companies over the past five decades, yet it was the relationships with the people and staff behind those operations that mattered most. His mark is left on the nearly 10,000 homes built — not just bricks and mortar, but opportunities for employment that changed lives for countless people, and impacted the greater Clarington community as a whole.
While at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, Hannu attained his private pilot’s license in 1970, sparking a lifelong passion with aviation. In his lifetime, he logged in over 10,000 flight hours in many different types of aircraft. Personal aviation highlights included flying his TBM around the world, piloting multiple award-winning restored World War II aircraft, and flying to Antarctica with a crew from Enterprise Air. But Hannu’s biggest thrill was to enthusiastically share the gift of flight with others. This included hundreds of flights for kids through the Young Eagles program, fly-overs on Remembrance Day, and flights for veterans. For decades, his summer plans revolved around going to and taking part in EAA’s AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Fiercely competitive — in addition to competing with others — Hannu enjoyed competing with himself, trying to beat previous times, speed, or scores. Hannu completed 16 grueling “E’tape du Tour” bicycle rides in France. Before he took up cycling, he was a runner and had completed several marathons. He also loved fast cars — speed-khanas and rallies in his early days, and track days with his Porsche in his later years. He also made sure his daughters knew how to drive a manual transmission vehicle. The hobbies he pursued led to many deep and meaningful friendships.
Hannu enjoyed lake time with family at their cottage most of all. Vacations to tropical destinations, alpine ski trips, and several European adventures were memorable occasions during Lisa and Lori’s growing-up years. In the past decade, Hannu and Karen had many Air Journeys, visiting more than 100 countries with France being their favorite. Yet Hannu wasn’t “retired.” When he wasn’t working, he was most likely flying, biking, or driving. He enjoyed tending to his massive vegetable garden and was an avid reader. Hannu cheered helplessly for the Toronto Maple Leafs, indulged in family game nights often, and was a very active “snowbird” in North Palm Beach, Florida.
In 2002, a new title was bestowed on Hannu — “Grandpa.” Time spent with his granddaughters, Hannah and Megan, was the best pastime of them all. Precious memories were made playing games, harvesting veggies in “grampy’s garden,” learning to drive on the runway, reading countless books, snow skiing, airplane flights, walks on the beach, and much more.
Most of all, Hannu loved his wife immensely. Karen faithfully stood by his side “for better or for worse.” She supported him wholeheartedly throughout their life journey, especially the past three months. There is no shortage of memories made. He cared deeply for his entire family and would do anything for them.
Hannu is survived by his best friend, spouse, and loving copilot of nearly 55 years, Karen; left to honor his legacy are twin daughters Lisa (Paul) Ziegele, and Lori Halvorson; granddaughters Hannah and Megan Ziegele whom he was extremely proud of; siblings Marja Halminen, John (Susan) Halminen, Anu (Peter) Thorne, Paul (Lisa) Halminen, and Anita (Joe Hawco) Halminen.
