HAMMER, Edward “Butch” Harold Hammer
April 3, 1952 - March 1, 2026It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward “Butch” Hammer, in his 74th year. Surrounded by his family, he went to be with the lord on Sunday March 1, 2026.
Predeceased by his parents Edward and Marjorie (Fisher), and his sister Heather (Steppler). Butch was the devoted husband of Donna (Belkwell) for 46 wonderful years, and loving father of Matthew (Katarina), Cody (Kristen) and Brandon (Sara).
Affectionally known as Grandpa and Papa, he deeply cherished his grandsons Bennett, Jacob, and Preston, finding peace and pride in knowing they will carry forward his name.
He was Uncle Butch to many nieces and nephews and shared a brother like bond with his cousin George Hammer. Butch also treasured a lifelong friendship with Ken (Groundhog) and Sharon Metcalf.
A truck driver by trade and passion, Butch was known to boast he had “backed up more miles than most would go forward.” Yet his greatest joy was being with his family “puttering,” as he called it. Whether at home in New Dundee or at the Family Property in Combermere. When a project was complete you would often hear his trademark grin in the words:
“A blind man, on a fast horse, on a dark night, would be glad to see that.”
His life went too fast, but it was a life well lived full of pride, humour, and love. He led his family with strength, honesty, and integrity, always preparing them for a time he wouldn’t be there.
The family would like to thank the dedicated, empathetic staff, volunteers and care givers at the Barry’s Bay St Francis Memorial Hospital and the Madawaska Valley Hospice.
Family and Friends are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial of Butch’s life at 11:00 Friday March 13, 2026, at St Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Barry’s Bay, with a reception to follow at Barry’s Bay Seniors Centre.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation.
