HAYWOOD , Murray Leroy Haywood
May 12, 1941 - August 24, 2025
It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Murray Leroy Haywood (84) which occurred on August 24, 2025 at St Joseph’s Hospital (Hospice) in Thunder Bay, Ontario surrounded by love and family. Murray was a cherished soul, whose presence graced the lives of all who had the privilege to know and love him.
At the heart of Murray’s life was a deep devotion to family. Murray was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Marie (Harding) Haywood (1998). He was a devoted father to his two children, Debbie Haywood and David Haywood and a proud grandfather of five grandchildren and great-grandfather of four (“the little guys”). Murray was also a devoted brother-in-law and uncle who loved his nieces and nephews and treated them as his own.
Family gatherings, holidays and Sunday suppers echoed with his laughter, and his wisdom became the glue that held us together in moments of both celebration and challenge. Murray taught us all the importance of showing up, loving and supporting each other. The lessons and love he gave so freely to us will be carried forward and his stories told for generations.
Murray was a kind and gentle man who lived his life deeply caring for his family and others. His door was always open and there was always time for a cup of tea or a cold beverage. One of his gifts was the ability to listen and provide wisdom in the most gentle manner. Once you entered the Haywood home, you were family.
Also known for his humor and loving a great belly laugh, Murray had the most impressive one liners and sayings. Many originated from his East Coast roots and didn’t land quite the same in Thunder Bay, causing them to be even more hilarious. “I don’t get involved in family disputes between bickering siblings” and “A hug is no good unless you give it away” will be carried on. His DeeDee song for the little ones and hugs were legendary.
Murray was born in Campbellton, NB, grew up living in Point La Nim, NB, and worked at NBIP in Dalhousie, NB until 1982. He spent his time enjoying family, hunting, fishing, the cottage and found his love of sailing on the Bay of Chaleur on his boat, Lucille II. After moving to Thunder Bay, ON in 1984, he continued sailing on Lake Superior for many years enjoying the amazing beauty of this area. He worked for the City of Thunder Bay in Property and Standards until he retired in 2006.
Murray’s gift of storytelling allowed us to enjoy many “back at the camp, on the river and on the lake” stories that will be shared for generations to come. A good game of crib was had by all with Murray. Another passion of his was carving and we are blessed to be left with his many beautiful creations.
Perhaps the most enduring legacy he leaves is one of kindness. Those who met him, felt seen, valued and loved. His kindness was woven into the fabric of his being. Murray taught by example that compassion costs nothing but means everything, and his legacy will live on in the kindness of others. Every family prayer ended with “May the less fortunate have food and shelter also.”
Murray will be deeply missed by his family, Debbie (Andy), Dave (Cherie), Evan (Julia), Emma (Ryan), Sarah (Nick), Ethan (Sarah), Ashley (Brandon), Eli, Reid, Raiden, Finn and his last love Violet.
Though the world feels emptier in his absence, his influence endures—in the laughter of loved ones, in the beauty of a garden, in a good fishing or hunting trip, in a good meal, and in the countless acts of kindness he inspired. His stories will ripple through generations, his lessons will guide us, and his love will remain a steady light in our hearts.
As per his wishes, a family celebration will take place next summer in New Mills, New Brunswick. If desired, donations can be made to the Humane Society or to the Northern Cancer Fund at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
