DEMPSTER, Helen Teresa (Flaherty) Dempster Obituary

DEMPSTER, Helen Teresa (nee Flaherty) – (October 30, 1937 – October 7, 2015) – It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Helen, peacefully at Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital Wednesday October 7, 2015.

Predeceased by her parents, J. Frank and Dorothy (Rhodes) Flaherty; and son-in-law Peter Martin. She will be dearly missed by her children, Sharron Martin (Arnold Gracey), Mary Ellen (Bob Huggins), Jimmy (Monique Albert) and Michael (Sheryl Surtees); grandchildren, Allison, Jackie, Steve, Derek, Mairin, Ben, Mason and Logan; and great-grandchildren, Sara, Dez, Cid and Drake.

She will also be missed by siblings Mary Anne Flaherty, The Honourable Roderick J. Flaherty (Maria Flaherty) and Kathleen Fee (Victor Knight) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was born and raised in Ottawa and had a large circle of childhood friends. She was a strong woman who loved quick wit, a snappy tune and her beloved rescued cats. Many times we would bring home a mangy stray from as far as Windsor, Ontario only to have mom nurse it back to robust health.

Up to the time of mom’s illness, she worked with a market research company where she met new friends and people from all over the city. We loved to hear her stories of how the city changed over the years and of the people she met every day.

She fought a long hard battle with cancer and we are grateful for the support from the CCAC, Bayshore Home Health, Robertson House, Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, Queensway Carleton Hospital and the Elisabeth Bruyère Palliative Care Unit. Mom’s medical team provided her with dignity and care much deserved.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held at Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario on Thursday October 15th. Gathering at 11 a.m., Memorial at 1:00 p.m.
