
It is with profound sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Elizabeth “Betty” Sandra Hughan on August 8, 2025. Betty was known for her kindness, generosity, and gentle spirit. She treasured her family and friends deeply, always offering her unwavering love and care. A proud wife, stepmother, grandmother, and lifelong animal lover, Betty shared a special bond with the many pets she raised over the years.
Betty grew up in the Burks Falls and Katrine area, attending local schools before studying at Canadore College in North Bay. She enjoyed a career in drafting and surveying, working in Toronto and Huntsville, where she met her beloved husband Ross. Together, they shared 24 wonderful years, building a loving home and life together.
She is survived by her devoted husband Ross, their gentle puppy Toby, stepchildren Sarah (Mark) and Jeffrey (Kerrie), and grandchildren Georgia and Alexandra. Betty will be missed by her siblings Carol (Al), Ron (Gloria), and Brian. She is predeceased by siblings Bill (Gillian), Bonnie, Glen, and Ross, and parents Gordon and Isabel Johnston. Also remembered by cousin Lawrence, close friends Patti, Mary-Ellen, and Wanda, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Visitation will be held at Opatovsky Funeral Home – Dempster Chapel, 210 Ontario Street, Burk’s Falls, on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A celebration of life service will follow at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Betty’s brother, Dr. Ron Johnston. Interment will take place at Burk’s Falls Cemetery.
