HUNTER, Joseph “Joe” Hunter
February 1, 1945 - February 21, 2026
Passed away peacefully in Port Perry. Son of James and Minnie and beloved husband of 56 years to his loving wife Sandra, married October 15th, 1969.
Born and raised on Grove Street in East Belfast, Joe joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary before sailing across the Atlantic to Canada in June 1967. He joined the Metropolitan Toronto Police Service, starting at 52 Division and rising the ranks to Deputy Chief of Police until his retirement in July 2001. A respected ‘Cops Cop’, Joe was known for his ethical and firm but fair leadership. An accomplished public servant, Joe received many awards for his investigations and his service.
Beyond the badge he was a man of many passions, Joe was a talented short story writer, painter, and devoted fan of Luciano Pavarotti, Blue Rodeo, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Manchester United. He cherished his dogs Paddy, Choco and Tyson, and enjoyed sipping Black Bush Irish Whiskey. He played semi professional cricket in Belfast. He loved to play tennis, golf and football. He coached soccer and was an active Rotarian helping to raise money for many years in the community. His desire to serve the public never ceased and his interest in politics and government never waned.
He is survived by his loving wife Sandra, sons Kevin (Julia), Martin (Jessica), and Colin (Cassandra), grandchildren Damion, Ronan, Owen, Quinn, Harry, and Rose, and their families. He also has loving family and friends in Belfast and across the world.
A private memorial will be held March 2, 2026, in Port Perry. An online condolence book is available, and members of the family would appreciate if you would take the time to sign it and leave a short story or two or any fond recollection at www.lowandlow.ca
Flowers are appreciated, however in lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke society in his name are appreciated.
With love from the family.
