HUTCHINSON Bruce George Hutchinson
October 29, 1934 - December 23, 2025He was Distinguished Professor Emeritus Civil and Environmental Engineering, was born in Sydney, Australia, the fourth child of George Thomas and Winifred Emily (White) Hutchinson. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Douglas Mary McCollum of Port Credit Ontario and his three children Douglas Jean (Mark) Diederichs, Thomas Andrew (Diane), Susan Winifred (Graham) Mitchell and his five grandchildren Kaitlyn, Isla, Elizabeth (Ben), Callum and Poppy.
He left Australia for Canada in August 1957 to join a master’s program in Civil Engineering at Queen’s University during which time he met Mary. In 1962 he was appointed a lecturer in Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo where he remained until his retirement in 1996. Over his 32-year career, he served in various roles including Associate Dean and Chair and Editor of Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering. Dr Hutchinson made significant contributions to transport planning particularly in the areas of urban transport, airport and highway engineering, and engineering education.
Visiting professorships in Switzerland, Kuwait, Australia and beyond alongside consultancies with the World Bank, and various government organisations allowed Bruce, Mary and their family a lifetime of overseas adventure that he and Mary continued until recent months.
