ISABEL, Jose Isabel
November 5, 1941 - February 3, 2026
It is with heavy hearts — hearts filled with gratitude for a lifetime of his love and support — that we share the news of our dad’s passing. Jose passed peacefully at his home in Toronto in his 85th year, surrounded by people he loved the most in the world.
Predeceased by the love of his life, Maria Hermínia. Dear father of Ofelia (Jeff), Dina (Pierre) and Nelson (Marguerett). Loving and very proud grandfather of Lucas, Nicolas, Julia, Tomas and Daniel. Brother of Alzira and Henrique. Mentor and confidante to many real and adopted nieces, nephews and friends.
Jose was born in Cruzes, Portugal to a poor family but one that was filled with love, laughter and a sense of community — things he would continue to honour throughout his life. He won the lottery many times throughout his 84+ years, including (1) meeting the love of his life as a child, (2) being deployed to Cabo Verde for his army service (allowing him to hang out on the beach), (3) moving to Canada in 1966, (4) being hired by the Ford Motor Co. and (5) having three healthy children who always felt that they too won the lottery.
Jose always brought his A-game to each of his roles: son, sibling, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He had a calmness and patience about him that made him unique… he was known for being a ‘super chill’, kind and pleasant human being. Jose had a willingness to see the best version of everyone he met. Well before it was fashionable, he would actively support each person’s individual perspectives — always recognizing everyone had a unique gift.
He was a quiet extrovert who always loved a full house, while never being the centre of attention. He will be deeply missed and will always remain in our hearts.
Visitation will be at Cardinal Funeral Home at 366 Bathurst Street on Friday, February 6th from 3-5pm and 6-8pm. Funeral Service will be held at the same location on Saturday, February 7th at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the seniors programs at the Abrigo Centre (abrigo.ca) or West Neighbourhood House (westnh.org).
Special thank you to Jose’s amazing caregiver and friend, Sheine Mendoza, for allowing him to spend his last year exactly how he wanted and to all the incredible humans who helped him live independently until the end.
