THOMPSON, James Matheson – We are saddened to announce the passing of James Matheson Thompson, on December 26, 2015.
James was 89 years old.
Son of Sarah Louise Matheson and Thomas Wilfred Thompson, he was born in Glammis, Ontario, on February 17, 1926.
He will be greatly missed by his daughter Marion Quéma Thompson and Dr. Anne Quéma, Acadia University, dear friend and former wife. Growing up on a farm in Glammis, he went on to study philosophy at the University of Toronto graduating summa cum laude and receiving scholarships each year, followed by theology at Knox College and later pursuing doctoral studies at Aberdeen University.
He was involved with the Presbyterian Church as a minister (1955-56) before going on to teach at Carleton University for 40 years in philosophy and in the last 15, art history. He continued to serve the Presbyterian Church for another 9 years in various roles and proposed policy accepted by the Church for University Chaplaincy. He will be remembered lovingly as a kind, gentle man who took pleasure in learning and sharing knowledge, being in nature and who saw the best in everyone.
A special thanks to all those at the Colonel By Retirement Home, who took such good care of him. A memorial service will be held at Knox Church in Ottawa on January 23rd at 1:00 p.m. and another service in the spring in Glammis.
