LEEMING, Joan Lucille (Ware) Leeming Obituary
LEEMING, Joan Lucille (nee Ware) – May 27, 1923 – December 26, 2015
Was born on May 27th, 1923 in Huntsville, Ontario to Beatrice (nee Mulvaney) and Norman Ware and was sister to Elmo, Bette, Robert, Dixon, Jane, and Peter.
She grew up in Huntsville where she attended elementary and high school. Joan loved nature, spending time walking, skiing and excelling at figure skating and canoeing.
At age 18, following her father’s death, the family moved to High Park in Toronto where she was a secretary. She met and later married Harry James Leeming, a RCAF pilot, with who she had four children, Daniel, Frances, James and Shelagh.
Every summer Joan, Harry and family spent time at the Ware family cottage on Cardwell Lake in Huntsville, the same cottage in which Joan spent summers as a child.
Joan volunteered as a teacher of English as a Second Language for many years and introduced English to many new Canadians.
Her hobbies included gardening, pottery, quilting, and cooking. Joan took sheer joy from the natural world and enjoyed watching birds and butterflies pass through her garden.
Joan and Harry were very welcoming to friends of their children and the house on Appledale Road became a hub of constant activity, well remembered by many to this day. Joan’s calm manner and gentle humour will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
After a long life of good health and a recent battle with cancer, Joan passed away on Saturday December 26th, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario with family members at her bedside. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered by her children, her grandchildren Oliver and Hanah, and her daughter-in-law Diane Riley and son-in-law John Edwards.
A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held on Saturday January 23rd, 2016, at Turner and Porter Funeral Home, York Chapel 2357 Bloor Street West at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
