JOHN, O’Prey, Basil Francis Joseph John

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Basil O’Prey, 85, who died peacefully on December 18, 2025, after a 22 year battle with prostate cancer. Born on March 29,1940 in Toronto, Ontario, to parents Maggie and Hugh O’Prey, Basil was the youngest of 7 siblings, Philomena, Mary, Theresa, Bernard, Rita and Emmanuel. Basil was a loyal and faithful husband to Joan, his loving wife for over 60 years. He was a devoted father to Patrick and Denise (nee Cresdee), Kevin and Lynne (nee Rogers), Kathleen and John (Iannarelli) and Theresa and Russ (Fockler). He was a proud grandad, gdad and Superman to Christopher and Brooklyn (nee Harman), Connor and Sydney (nee Lespouridis), Jamie and Colin (Lawrence), Nieve, Elizabeth and Spencer (DiPaolo), Riley, Liam, Cole and Jordyn (Willcocks), Brendan, Thomas and Claire, as well as a great-grandad to baby Jack. Basil was an exceptional storyteller who had a big booming baritone voice and a larger- than-life presence, which wrapped around you as soon as he walked into the room. The epitome of a good man, Basil was beloved by all who came across his path. He was a man of great courage, faith, kindness and humour. Basil’s zest for life, joyful spirit, awesome hugs and unwavering love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. A private funeral will take place for immediate family members only, followed by a Celebration of Life to be held at a future date.
