JOHNSTON, David Robert Carson Johnston December 9, 1947 - July 14, 2025
JOHNSTON, David Robert Carson Johnston

Born in Oshawa, ON, to John and Ethyl Johnston, predecessed, on December 9, 1947. Passed peacefully on July 14, 2025 at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville surrounded by his family.

David was the beloved husband of over 52 years to Jewel, cherished father to Christopher (Cherri), Darrin, and Jennifer, and adored papa to Harleigh and Wyatt. David was the youngest of his siblings – Vivian (Jim) Rider, both predecessed, Francis (Donna) Johnston, Rae (Raymond, predecessed) Osborne, Alvin, predecessed, (Sharon) Johnston, and Shirley (Duane) Dickinson.

Growing up on a farm, David learned the value of physical labour, hardwork, and teamwork. He was a mischievous child with a good heart and a special bond with his mom, who ingrained his deep love for his family. David always looked forward to seeing and chatting with everyone at the Johnston family picnics and Christmases every year.

David’s love of sports began early and he enjoyed playing baseball and soccer. When he wasn’t able to play anymore, he kept score for the Wilmot Creek Lakers baseball team, so he could continue to be part of the team. He was honoured to have been recognized for his 20+ years of volunteer work with the team. His favourite teams to follow and discuss were the Toronto Blue Jays, Oshawa Generals, and Boston Bruins.

For over 20 years, David worked as an electrician at General Motors in Oshawa. During his time there he was part of the volunteer firefighters.

While life threw many challenges at David, he lived his life with great dignity, grace, and integrity. When he became a paraplegic he chose to make the most of it and tried not to let it limit him. When the weather was cooperative, he would be out scooting around the Wilmot Creek community and would stop to chat with anyone he saw. If you were busy, he would be sure to leave you with a smile and a wave.

David received wonderful home care from many nurses and PSWs over the years. Special thank you to VHA nurses Tammi, who cared for him for 25+ years, Sarah, and Erin, and CCD team Karen, Marsha, Julie, Aimee, Montana, and Yvonne.

There are not enough words to express the impact David had on all of the people who had the pleasure of knowing him and the void he has left in our hearts. The world has lost a remarkable soul. He will be missed forever and loved until the end of time.

Donations in David’s memory can be made to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario or to a charity of your choice.

A service for David will be held on Friday, August 8, 2025 at 11am at St. Paul’s United Church in Bowmanville with a reception to follow. All are welcome.
