JOHNSTON, Marian Johnston

July 24, 1940 - February 10, 2026
JOHNSTON, Marian Johnston

It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Marian, has passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a determined fight against a short illness.
Born July 24, 1940 in Montreal, she was the first daughter of the late George and Theo Murray. She was the beloved wife of Robert (Bob) Johnston and a cherished mother to Wendy, Donna (Todd), and Julie. She was the adored grandmother to her ten grandchildren, Cameron (Yvonne), Nicholas (Brittany), Shannon (Keenan), James (Stephanie), Christyn (Juan), Lindsay, Brady, Jonah, Samuel, and Carter. Great Grandma to Arthur, Charles, and Amelia, who brought her joy every day.
Marian grew up in Ottawa with her sisters Joan (deceased), Barb (Ned), and Cathy (Bob), who all held a special place in her heart. She loved being an aunt to her nieces and nephews at home and abroad.
Marian’s story would not be complete without her “rock,” Bob Johnston. Married on August 15, 1964, Marian and Bob defined what partnership truly looks like, and serve as an inspiration for their family. 61 years in, you would still find Marian and Bob walking down the street hand-in-hand. Their stories are intertwined, and their influence is immeasurable.

Marian was creative and crafty – showcased by her love for card making and knitting, thanklessly producing and donating hundreds of baby hats to local hospitals, family, and friends. She loved attending craft shows and musicals. An avid sports fan, she watched the Ottawa Senators religiously and devoted much of her time to football and baseball as well. She made sure her children and grandchildren knew her social calendar would be scheduled around sports! Even so, she never missed a single family event, big or small, even if it meant travelling across the country and back.

Marian was a cheerleader to her loved ones and the only one who celebrated their milestones even more than they celebrated themselves. She was often heard in the crowd at a soccer game or a graduation, and singing the loudest during ‘Happy Birthday.’ Marian was the warmest in every room, finding a way to make conversation with anyone. Her kindness and selflessness are not lost on our family; she has inspired how we care for those around us. Family was her whole heart and pride, and her ours.
We love you more than you could ever know, Grandma.

A Celebration of Marian’s life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Cole Funeral Services. Join us to share your fond memories of her with others.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, Ottawa Network for Borderline Personality Disorder, Canadian Mental Health Association, or the charity of your choice would be most appreciated.
