JOHNSTONE, David John Johnstone
March 12, 1952 - December 24, 2025He was a loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose warmth, intellect, and humanity left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
Born in Winnipeg to Gladys and John Johnstone, David’s life unfolded with thoughtfulness and purpose, shaped over time by experience, reflection, and an ever-growing curiosity about the world and the people in it. His openness, commitment to service, and humanitarian outlook were qualities that deepened as he moved through life, informed by his love of reading and extensive travels in Canada and abroad.
Family was the centre of David’s life. He was a devoted husband of 51 years to Ginette (née Rivard), with whom he built a home grounded in love, conversation, and mutual respect. He was a proud and supportive father to Robert (Linnea Duke), Eric (Claude Ouellette), and Julie (Paul Graham). He followed his grandchildren – Tyler, Evan and Avery Graham and Aiden, Trahern and Callum Johnstone – with pride and genuine interest. David is also remembered by his sister, Barb Dreger (Lloyd), and by extended family and friends.
David took great pride in his military service and later in a fulfilling career in information technology, where he supported organizations across multiple sectors, including health care. Known for his analytical mind and strong affinity for math, history, technology, and innovation, David was endlessly interested in understanding how systems worked—and, just as importantly, how people worked within them.
A dedicated volunteer, David contributed his time and expertise to international development initiatives and local community efforts. He carried a clear awareness of his good fortune and never took it for granted, approaching the world with a genuine desire to contribute meaningfully.
An avid walker, David valued the quiet solitude of his ‘10,000 steps a day’, just as much as he cherished good company, thoughtful conversation, and a well-chosen glass of red wine (actually, he wasn’t that picky about his red wine). He had a rare ability to speak with anyone about anything, and in doing so made people feel heard and valued. Deeply non-judgmental and profoundly kind, David embodied warmth and generosity in everyday interactions. He will be remembered most for his kindness, intellect, and humanity. He touched many lives and his legacy lives on through his family, friends, and community.
