WALDICK, Karen Anne Waldick Obituary
WALDICK, Karen Anne – (July 27, 1943 – October 3, 2015) Karen Anne Waldick, age 72, Ottawa, Ontario, passed away on October 3, 2015 at Elisabeth-Bruyere Hospital after a valiant effort to overcome cancer.
She was born in Port Dover, Ontario, on July 27, 1943 and is predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Violet (Balkwill). Karen graduated with an Honours BA in English Literature in 1972 from Carleton University in Ottawa and worked for many years at Ottawa City Hall.
Karen was an honorary member of the family of Linda (Martin) and John Piazza. She will be missed by godson Lee Piazza and Natalie (Reg Southee) and Vanessa and the extended Piazza and Martin families. This will be the first Thanksgiving in a very long time that Karen is not at our table.
Karen leaves behind many people who will miss her unconditional and empathetic friendship. She was a close friend of the families of Becky McGavin and Michael Siddons and Josey and John Finley. Becky will always remember fondly the good times at 107 Metcalfe and lunches over the years at the Elgin Street Diner, Karen’s favorite restaurant. Josey and John will miss the many stimulating conversations with Karen on any given topic.
Although Ottawa became home for Karen, Port Dover was never far from her heart. She kept in touch and remembered all the stories. Karen traveled the world and enjoyed exotic destinations, including India and Thailand. She visited dear friends Michael Young and John Vaughan in England and loved the Greek Isles. She visited her great friend John McAvity in New Brunswick many times and the two travelled together to South America. Karen lived in the Shefford Heritage Housing Co-operative where she had friends and caring neighbours over many years. She dressed with flare and style and was an aficionado of Vanilla, where she met longtime friend Sally Chinn.
Karen was a storyteller, never forgetting details, no matter how far back the story went. She held strong opinions and there was no point arguing. She enjoyed politics, always championing the underdog in society, and will be sorry to miss the upcoming election. Karen loved tennis above all sports. Roger Federer was her hero. She followed his career closely and disliked anyone who ever beat him. British humour was a passion for Karen. She loved Kingsley Amis and John Cleese, sharing their understanding of the absurdities of life. Karen never took herself too seriously. And she loved a party. We will miss her.
Special thanks to Dr. Neil Rogers, for whom Karen had such great respect.
Linda and Becky are hosting a remembrance gathering for friends who knew Karen on Saturday November 7th from 2pm to 5pm at Linda and John Piazza’s house, 30 Charles Street, Ottawa Ontario, K1M 1R2.
