MASSIAH, Karl Alleyne  –

1940 – 2023

Died peacefully, at Humber River Hospital on June 19, 2023, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Loving husband of 57 years to Pamela (DaCamara); devoted father to Melanie (Eric) and Roberta; and proud grandfather (a.k.a. “Grumpy”) to Naomi, Colin, Sophia and Ernie.

He leaves behind his sister, Patricia (Andrew); and brother, Robert (Yvette); as well as many dear nieces and nephews.

Born in Barbados, he attended the Lodge School and went on to study medicine at University College of the West Indies, where he graduated with honours in 1965.

His post-graduate studies were done in Toronto in Orthopaedics, and he became the first Chief of Orthopaedics at the newly established Etobicoke General Hospital.

There, he had a successful career and also served as President of the Medical Staff Association.

He was instrumental in founding the UWI Medical Alumni Association (UWIMAA) and worked tirelessly on its behalf. He retired in 2005 and enjoyed working in the garden with his roses, bird carving, and travel adventures around the world. His last trip was to his beloved Barbados in 2020, returning just in time to avoid COVID.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 4-8 p.m., and on Friday, July 28, 2023, from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of Karl’s Life at 11 a.m. at the Simple Alternative Funeral Centre Mississauga (1535 South Gateway Rd., Mississauga). Reception to immediately follow. Cremation has taken place.
