LAYZELL , Gina Layzell

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Georgina (Gina) Katherine Layzell, who passed away peacefully in the arms of her beloved husband, Ben on July 31st, 30 days after their magically lovely wedding. Gina is predeceased by her grandparents who she cherished dearly, Stella and George Gartland, Hugh and Janet Wynne-Edwards, Ruth and George Layzell. She is survived by her devoted husband Ben Walmsley, loving parents Katherine Wynne-Edwards and David Layzell, her sister Veronica Layzell (Liam Todesco), her mother-in-law Dianne Groll (Mike Hill), her father-in-law Chris Walmsley (Linda Schmalz), her sister-in-law Drew Walmsley (Kenny Trafford) and her grandparents through marriage Lucille Groll, Gertrud and Otto Schmalz. Her loyal service dog of 10 years, Mr. Darcy, also mourns.

Gina was born in Kingston, and while she spent her high school years in Calgary, she always considered Kingston her home. She was a vibrant, intelligent, creative and determined young woman who was active and athletic in her school years. Gina had dreams of helping others triumph over their disabilities, and completed her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioural Psychology at St. Lawrence College. In 2021, she began her Masters in Neuroscience at Queen’s University.

Gina loved to sew, needlepoint, thrift, game, sculpt, and craft. One of her greatest joys was to decorate their condo with Ben. Each piece of furniture and art was chosen with love and represented a meaningful story in their lives. Gina’s accomplishments and passion are remarkable given the complex medical problems she endured over the last 16 years. Gina, Ben, and their families are appreciative of the caring doctors, nurses, home care workers, and community care workers nurses who provided excellent care over the years. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, October 31st at 1- 3 PM, 257 Bath Road, Kingston, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Gina’s memory to Ehler Danlos Canada (edscanada.org/).
