LEEUWEN, Catharina Maria ‘Catherine’ Van Leeuwen (née van Meer)

In loving memory of Catherine Van Leeuwen, 93, of Pickering, Ontario, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born in Steenbergen, The Netherlands, Catherine grew up on a family farm and excelled in academics and athletics. In the early 1950s, she emigrated to Canada with her family, settling in Saskatchewan, where she met her future husband, Hans. They married in 1956 and raised their family of five, living in various cities before making Pickering their home for the past 55 years.

A proud Canadian, Catherine was passionate about politics and an active poll worker. She was also a devout Catholic, a dedicated member of Holy Redeemer Parish, and a devoted volunteer with the Catholic Women’s Guild. Known for her wisdom, moral guidance, and warm kitchen conversations, she deeply influenced everyone who knew her.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children and their families: Tom and Mary Van Leeuwen (Lauren and Rob; Benjamin and Heather, Bennett and Millie; Claire, Tim and Riley; Mark and Brittany; Bridget); Jennifer Mai (Danielle and Thomas; Paul and Lauren; Maureen; Martha); Michael Van Leeuwen and Michal Freedhoff (Zahava; Rena; Samuel; Vivienne); Mary Lynn Van Leeuwen; and Ann and Larry Huibers (Jenna and Ed). She was predeceased by her husband Hans and several siblings and is survived by her sister Wilhelmina and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: McEachnie Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Funeral Mass: Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM.

Reception: Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Hall, following the mass, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Burial: Christ the King Cemetery at 3:00 PM.

Memorial donations may be made to the Toronto Right to Life.
