BLECHA, Ludmila Blecha

Blecha LudmilaBLECHA, Ludmila  – Passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at age 80, in Toronto, after long battles with varying illnesses.

Greatly missed by her son, Matthew J. Blecha; fondly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Coco; her three grandchildren, Natalie, Lucy and Charlie; by her sister, Ing Eliska Vobrazková and her family; and her brother, Milo Cerny and his family.

Ludmila was predeceased by her former husband, Dr. Matthew Blecha.

Born on January 13, 1943, and raised in Cechtice, South-East of Prague, in former Czechoslovakia, Ludmila married Matthew Blecha in London, England, in 1964, and immigrated to Canada shortly afterwards.

Ludmila accompanied Matthew throughout his early career in geology, living in various remote regions of Eastern Canada before they settled in Toronto in the early 1970s. ‘Dunia’ often said her greatest joy in life was giving birth to her only child, Matthew J., in 1966. The couple separated in 1973, after which time Ludmila found work as a retail sales clerk with Birks Jewelers in downtown Toronto, where she worked for many years.

They eventually divorced in 1977. Towards the end of her career, she re-trained and enjoyed work as a personal support worker. Ludmila endured many challenges in her life. She suffered from chronic kidney disease, type II diabetes, mental disorders, and several bouts of varying cancers. She was well cared for in her later years by her many doctors, nurses, medical and retirement residence staff, who are all owed a debt of thanks.

Ludmila will be honoured during Sunday service on October 29th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Church, 496 Gladstone Ave., Toronto.

If desired, donations may be made to the Michael Garron Hospital or to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Toronto.
