It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Paul, who left us far too soon on June 16, 2025, a few days after his 68th birthday.
Beloved husband of Olya for 43 wonderful years. Loving father of Andrew (Erika), Slavko (Alicia), and Ala (Geoff). Cherished brother of Dr. George (Orysia), Dr. Antony (Natalie), Ihor (Tania), and Dr. Ala (Dr. Kelly). Dearest uncle of Peter, Maxsym (Marissa), Simon (Chanell), Zachary, Markian (Kate), Luka (Jade), and Maya (Matt). Godfather/Kym to Peter Lysyk and Tianna Lishchyna, godchildren. Predeceased by his parents George H and Olena Lysyk. Paul will be missed by his family and his many close lifetime friends through the Ukrainian, sports and business community.
Born on June 6, 1957 and raised in Oshawa, to proud Ukrainian immigrants that moved to this country to give their children a better life and called this country their home. They raised their children knowing that Canada came first and their Ukrainian heritage was second. Paul attended elementary school at Gertrude Colpus PS and T. R. McEwen PS. He then graduated from Donevan Secondary School as the star quarterback. From a young age, Paul loved his sports, especially hockey and lacrosse. He was an avid hockey player for Kingside Park and a proud alumnus of the Oshawa Green Gales coached by the legendary Jimmy Bishop. Paul then attended the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario where he received his Bachelor Degree in Education. Although he only did his teaching placement, one student showed him that teaching was not his calling because of their misbehaved actions (and Paul’s true Gemini personality) which led him to leave teaching. He married his best friend and soul mate, Olya (nee Schewtschenko from London, Ontario) in 1982 and they set roots in Oshawa. Paul started working in the family construction/property management business that his parents started, at the young age of 12, painting balconies and cutting grass. Paul was extremely gifted and smart in construction where he could take a piece of land and layout the buildings within a millimeter precision of the original design. Often, you would catch Paul on a small or big construction machine maneuvering with skill and grace. Paul was an extremely successful and brilliant businessman whose generosity never wavered.
Paul was the very definition of community. A lifelong supporter and tireless builder, he poured his heart, time and energy into making his city a better place through his gifts and talents. Whether lending a hand to local charities, serving on committees, including as a Director and Treasurer of the Ukrainian Vacation Resort (ODUM), or showing up uninvited – but always welcome – to help a friend or neighbour.
Paul lived fully, worked hard, and played even harder. He loved travelling, especially family trips together skiing or to the beach. Though his fishing skills never quite caught up to his enthusiasm, he never let that get in the way of a good story, a great laugh, or another cast.
Family was his anchor. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, brother in law and uncle, always present, always proud, and always ready to show up. He loved his family fully and fiercely. He will forever be remembered by his cottage family and friends as the ‘Temagami Water Wolf Slayer’
