The family of Rob MacDonald is sad to announce his passing on August 9, 2025, at the age of 52, following a difficult journey with alcohol addiction. We share this openly, not to define him by his illness, but in the hope that it may encourage understanding, compassion, and the importance of seeking help.
Rob was born in London. He was a natural athlete and grew up playing hockey and working hard at whatever he put his mind to. He enjoyed a lifetime of treasured summers and any opportunity to be at the family cottage in Lurgan Beach.
It is difficult to capture the life of someone in an obituary—especially when their story includes the struggles of addiction. But Rob was so much more than his challenges. In his best times, Robbie was a welcoming, engaging, and social guy. Always a ‘good buddy’ who never failed to enjoy his revelry with his close friends. Throughout his life, people were drawn to him for his charm and humour, often enabling and rescuing him from his many adventures.
With heartfelt gratitude, the family thanks his dear lifelong friend Craig Napier for his steadfast loyalty since grade school. Craig has always been there for Robbie.
Rob is survived by his wife, Rachel, whom he recently married. He will be remembered by his siblings Grant (Lauren) MacDonald and Hillary (Kevin) Van Spronsen; brother-in-law Hugh Getliffe; and nieces and nephews Amanda Getliffe, Morgan Getliffe (Andrew Soudant), Ava & James MacDonald, and Claire & Owen Van Spronsen. Robbie adored and loved his stepmom, Sharanne MacDonald. He was predeceased by his beloved dad, Rod MacDonald (2017), sister Tara Getliffe (2016), and mother Barbara (Vail) Merlo (2009).
An opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate Rob’s life will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Denning’s Funeral Home (32 Metcalfe Street West, Strathroy, Ontario N7G 1M6).
