It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Di Maio, at the age of 86, with his loving family by his side. Beloved husband of Carla (nee Zega) for 58 years. They had a beautiful bond that was steadfast, nurturing, and everlasting. Cherished father of Paola Melconian (husband Leon) and Giancarlo (wife Lisa). Adored and treasured Nonno of Mel, Dario, Kai, Emil, Quinn, Noah, and Hannah. Dearest Zio of Domenico Gammiero (wife Linda). Predeceased by his adored sister Giovanna Gammiero and her husband Antonio. Loved by his sister-in-law Laura and brother-in-law Angelo. John will be forever remembered by his extended family and friends, both in Canada and Italy.
John was born in Campodipietra, Campobasso, Italy in 1939. He immigrated to Canada in 1953, following his father Paolo’s dream for a better life. He attended WD Lowe Secondary School and became a dedicated and proud Tool and Die Maker, working at Nickleson Machine & Tool Inc. for 46 years. John was an active member of the Giovanni Caboto Club and a devoted volunteer for the Italian Canadian Handicapable Association. He enjoyed his backyard, cheering for his favourite hockey teams, classical music, opera, and always had a great passion to learn. Above all, his greatest joy was supporting the varied interests of his grandchildren and spending quality time with his family. His beautiful smile will never be forgotten.
Special thanks to Veronica and Nam for their compassionate care over the past few years, and to the Met Campus Palliative Care team for their kindness and support.
If you so desire, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Essex County or the Italian Canadian Handicapable Association would be appreciated by the family.
Visitation will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, from 2:00–5:00 p.m. and 7:00–9:00 p.m. at Families First, South Windsor, 3260 Dougall Ave. On Saturday, August 16, 2025, friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Angela Merici Church, 980 Louis Ave. Burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
