MAKI, Barbara Maki

November 30, 1932 - December 20, 2025
MAKI, Barbara Maki

Born Barbara Ferwagner on November 30, 1932, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and enduring love for her family.

Barbara was the sixth of seven children born to Thomas Ferwagner and Elizabeth Gertis in Fronhausen, Germany. She grew up alongside her siblingsβ€”Peter, Kathy, Liesel, Annie, Emmerich, and Francesβ€”forming deep bonds that endured life’s hardships, from the challenges of World War II to many years spent living an ocean apart.

In 1952, Barbara married Anton Maki Sr. and, soon after, with their first child in tow, bravely left Germany to immigrate to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There, Barbara and Anton Sr. built a new life together, working tirelessly, running a bakery, and becoming part of a community that felt like home.

Barbara was the devoted mother of the late Dr. Anton Maki Jr. and Christine Doherty (Mike). Her greatest joy came from her family, to whom she remained deeply committed throughout her life. She created many cherished memories with her grandchildren, Dr. Alex Maki (Caroline and Collier), Anna Cowley (Will, Cate, Emma, Liam, and Ellie), Anthony Maki, and Andrew Maki. Known for her humor, Barbara brought laughter into everyday momentsβ€”a gift that lives on through the stories shared by those who loved her most.

In her later years, Barbara remained active and engaged, valuing connection, routine, and the simple pleasures of daily life as a resident of Hillsdale Estate. She spent frequent time with her daughter Christine and son-in-law Mike, who lovingly cared for her with unwavering devotion until the end.

Barbara will be remembered as a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, and matriarch whose strength and courage shaped generations. Her memory will live on in the lives she touched and in the family she loved so deeply.
